Acne can be frustrating for anybody. There are many forms of acne medication out there today but the best way to treat acne is to prevent it before it comes up. We’re going to go over some of the causes of acne so that you will better be able to prevent it in the future.
Acne Myths
For various reasons, myths about how acne breakouts occur have arisen. We don’t know how or why but we do know that they are, for the most part, false. Here is a simple list of acne myths.
Acne is Hereditary
Some studies do suggest that acne can be passed down through the X chromosome. Therefore, many claim that if your mom had acne during any point in her life, you will too.
The fact is, not enough is known to prove this theory. In fact, there are many people whose parents had completely clear skin and yet they have acne. On the flipside, there are many parents who either currently have or in the past had acne but their kids remain pimple free.
Don’t be too discouraged if your parents have or had acne. It’s not necessarily hereditary.
Stress Makes You Break Out
The fact is acne can be cause by hormonal imbalances (which will be discussed below). Stress can add to an acne breakout but it cannot lead to a hormonal imbalance powerful enough to single-handedly cause a breakout.
So quit stressing!
Chocolate Causes Acne
Chocolate is said to contain fats and sugars that can make the skin oily and cause an acne breakout. The truth is chocolate by itself cannot cause acne.
However, some researchers say that a person’s diet can affect acne breakouts. We will discuss that below, but to include chocolate in your diet does not mean facial suicide.
Truths Revealed
So what are some causes of acne? Let’s go over some of them so you can be better able to prevent future breakouts.
Touch
Pressure from a hand, hat, chin strap, headband, etc. can cause acne. This is because the skin becomes aggravated which allows the breakout to occur. The best way to prevent this is to simple be cautious of things that can apply pressure to the skin.
Diet
We discussed chocolate earlier as being a no factor in acne breakouts. Overall diet can play a role however. This is because the food we take into our bodies has a direct effect on our insulin levels. Insulin is a hormone that can play a role in acne breakouts.
The simplest remedy for this is to watch what you eat. Fruits and vegetables must be part of your diet. Also, seafood, like fish, contains omega-3 fatty acids that can reduce the risk of breaking out.
Hormones
Events like pregnancy, menstrual cycle, and puberty can play a big role in acne breakouts because they alter our hormonal balance. Unfortunately there is not much to do to prevent this other than taking acne medication and keeping the skin clean.
Cosmetics
Before you go throwing all of your make-up away, pay attention. Only oil-based skin products pose a risk of acne breakout. This is because the oil clogs the pores. Pay attention to labels and buy only water-based products.
One Final Point
Acne is virtually never 100 percent preventable. You will more than likely break out at least once in life. However, follow these steps and you will greatly reduce the risk of a breakout. As always, good luck!
