Does Sugar Cause Acne?

July 4th, 2009

Refined sugars in their basic state can cause various problems including acne, but also extending to other skin problems, obesity, etc.  Essentially speaking, they don’t have much value.  And by sugar I’m not talking about the sugars you find naturally occurring in your fruits.  But there are a few basic things behind it.  First, sugar is not food and all the calories are completely empty.  You aren’t getting anything out of them, they’re not real food.

Second, these empty calories aren’t as empty in terms of the way your body processes them.  They can cause greater fat stores and obesity than you would have without it.  Third, Sugar can make you nervous and overstimulated.  It essentially causes blood sugar levels to spike while also causing adrenalin levels to spike.  With this adrenaline spike, you get the acne breakouts, and unfortunately it lacks the nutrients and interferes with your body’s natural absorption of vitamins such as B vitamins.  These deficiencies can also cause acne in and of themselves.  Many people later have a hard time giving up sugar, because it can be addictive for some.  But it is worth it.  After all, you get far more benefits than most associate with it.
